Puppy in the house

In Austin, it's not that unusual to find dogs or cats in either offices or other places of work and Bulldog Solutions is no different.

Today was General's day at the office and as you can see he was welcome with open arms. In fact, Sidney came into retrieve him probably 4 or 5 times. She'd say, "I need puppy loving!" and then off she'd go with General.

Here I found Sidney with General curled up with her as she learned to type with one hand.

What a cute couple!

Have I located a new dog sitter?!

Only in Texas - really?

My mom has always commented that only in Texas can you see the cloud formations we seemed blessed with.
This past Monday as I was coming out of a store, I looked up at the sky and was amazed at how breathtaking it was. Luckily I had my camera with me.

You've got to be kidding

Had lunch with a dear, dear friend of mine who was telling me how bad she is with directions and geography. But, you know, I'm certain she's better than poor Miss Teen USA - South Carolina. Was she smoking crack?

Take Me Away In Your Flying Machine

Charles and I ventured down to Lady Bird Lake (formerly Town Lake) in downtown Austin this evening to watch Redbull's Flugtag event.

According to Wikipedia, Flugtag is an event in which competitors attempt to fly in homemade flying machines.

Oh my goodness, I've never seen so many people. Charles' thought is there were probably 20,000 or so. I'm anxious to see the newspaper tomorrow to see what official estimates where.

It was incredibly hot in addition to being overcrowded. Our expectation was to go to the "official" side, but we quickly deduced that there was NO WAY to get through the masses to the other side. So, we finally settled into the spot where this video was shot and peered through branches.

Fun nonetheless, but we never saw a single contraption fly. I guess that's part of the fun -watching the crashes.

General It Is!

Charles and I had a tough time deciding on a name for our new puppy. We have Gizzy the Chihuaha, Belay the Calico and Zambezi the Himilayan.

My cats were named after events that occurred in my life. Belay joined me right before I went on a rock climbing trip and Zambezi joined our family just before I went bunji jumping over the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Gizzy took up residence with Charles last year.

I thought an Ewok name would have been cute and Charles was pulling for Chewbaca, but I have had my fill of Star Wars from my Ex and just couldn’t bring myself to anything from those films.

As I’ve learned a bit about Shih Tzu’s history from way back in 624 A.D. I found it steeped in China and Tibet, which led me towards wanting to name the puppy after one of the places I’d been in China, like Xian or Wuhan or perhaps the Yangtze River. I taught English in Changchun, north of Beijing during the summer of ’87, but the thought of hollering any of those names was a bit bizarre.

We finally stumbled across General Tso. Yes, from the Chinese dish General Tso chicken, but the real General Tso was from the Hunan province in China, which was one of my favorite places. And you know it fits well. We’ve taken to calling him General.

I’ve attached his latest videos where he’s quickly learned how to grab hold of Gizzy’s collar and pull her around. It’s hilarious and the reality is that he will always be a bulldog!

Oops - I guess that last comment should have some explanation around it for those of you who don't know. One of my fellow co-workers at Bulldog Solutions was actually the first "mommy" to General, but unfortunately she couldn't keep him, so she brought him to the office and I took him home and adopted him into our family. Thank you, Linda!

New addition

As much as I really want to post a longer, more appropriately excited blog, I can't stand it. You must see our new addition, who happens to still be nameless at this point.

For my friend, Kellie

Kellie and her husband Dan lost their sweet Golden Retriever, Blaze, this week. It makes me sad for them as I remember when I lost my Himilayan, Priscilla, a few years ago after having her companionship for over 18 years. Animals play such an integral part of our lives.

Kellie this song is for you. Your tomorrows will be better.
